May 2020's local council elections might sound a long way away but so much could happen to change Hartlepool's political scene by then. First of all, the new ward boundaries are expected to be in place; not only will there be an additional three seats on the council but also some changes to the wards' geographic/demographic make up. Secondly, however, it has just been announced that the Electoral Commission's given the go ahead to the Farage backed Brexit party. Press reports indicate that they're probably not contending 2019's local elections, but 2020 could well see that alter, as they're speaking of ultimately drilling down to parish council level. Time will tell. In a high Leave voting area such as Hartlepool (especially if local elections coincide with a GE and/or Brexit stumbles) this could prove rather interesting ...
